over QUO magazine

Vorm is beweging.

Paulo Neves
Dear reader,

Paulo Neves’ sculptures, spread all over the world, reflect his relationship with the material and his relationship with the sacred: "It is actually more an unconscious process and in this process I am but an instrument".

Whether we talk about Gonny's new kitchen cabinet, or Malevich’ black square or the grey area of Jc Duarte’s pupils, creativity is everywhere, provided there is willingness to see it.
This issue is an invitation to enjoy all that has been created.
Enjoy the creativity of the participants and also your own creative way to look at it!

The next issue of QUO Magazine will be online summer 2012 with the topic: “HeArt”.

Wie weet… we gaan!

In liefde

Reageren:

QUO Magazine is a living project that honors its name: QUO (???) Who knows ... we go!
This creative process called ‘QUO Magazine’ navigates on the artistic waters of its participants. And thus we start the first issue of the new year with the topic: ‘creativity’.

During the six years that I've run Speelhoje/QUO Centrum, I’ve organized ‘open podia’ for friends and their friends. We would then start the evening at the richly-filled table with all sorts of different snacks and drinks each one of us would bring, and afterwards the stage would be open to any and all who would like to present something. What happened - often so spontaneously - during those evenings was a true delight that made it very pleasant, either to be part of the audience either to be an actor, musician, poet and/or player.
Last year I also introduced an 'open podium' in the museum where I work. The event goes now over the borders.
The friend’s contribution to the refinement of the concept is also great. What a wonderful movement!

QUO Magazine will then organize open stages in the near future, with a pre-planned list of participants. Besides the organization of exhibitions - in collaboration with Paulo Neves -, you can count on special evenings under the special Portuguese sunset.

I wish us all a creative look at life!

With love

E são-no muitas vezes!

Creativiteit

Nico Buisman

Droom Denken Beslissen Doen Droom Denken Beslissen Doen
Droom Denken Beslissen Doen Droom

Changing reality. “step outside the borders...

Creativiteit zit in kleine onverwachte dingen.

Zondagochtend in November
Paul Vens

Creativiteit
Joris Barendrecht

December is net voorbij.

The Cosmic Dance
Maria João Gamito

Most of us are acquainted with recent discoveries in quantum physics – perhaps some readers have had mystical experiences or altered states of consciousness which quantum physics has helped to explain.

This evolutionary step in our consciousness has fostered the awareness of a deeper perception of reality - we’re now aware that everything in our Universe is conceived as energy vibrating at different speeds. On one side of the energy spectrum we have Matter, energy condensed and vibrating at a very low speed, and on the opposite side Spirit, dispersed energy vibrating at the highest speed.

Needless to say, due to the fact that we are all vibrating energy we’re intrinsically connected. And because music is also organized vibrating energy, my intention in this article is to show why we’re deeply influenced by music and how we constantly apply creativity to attain self-empowerment and integrity!

Music is wired deeply into us”, says Dr. Daniel Levitin (1), a cognitive psychologist who runs the Laboratory for Music Perception, Cognition and Expertise at McGill University in Montreal.

In his book “Music, The Brain, and Ecstasy: How Music Captures our Imagination" he states that (p. 312):

"All emotions are either negative or positive. Negative emotions arise when experience falls short of anticipation. (…) Conversely, positive emotions come about when experience exceeds anticipation. (…) Most emotion bobs up and down as our emotional life registers as surges and outbursts. Most emotion bobs up and down as small waves on a sea of motivation. But we experience a feeling of well-being when small positive emotional events occur continuously, and we become depressed or irritable when a train of small negative events accost us. From these principles, it's easy to see how music generates emotion. Music sets up anticipations and then satisfies them. It can withhold its resolutions, and heighten anticipation by doing so, then to [sic] satisfy the anticipation in a great gush of resolution."

Music organizes vibrations in ways that enhances our emotional state and expands our consciousness. We choose a special song to better communicate and intensify our emotions with a loved one, to sooth a child or to calm our nerves; we play a relaxing melody to induce a meditative state, we listen to music while driving or during many of the waiting moments we daily endure. Sometimes we go to a concert or a theatre to feel the musical vibrations live and clear. Most of us also use music as a healing therapy, even if only unconsciously. By selecting music that uplifts our energy when feeling tired or sleepy, or music that brings joy to the sadness we are experiencing, we are supporting the harmony of our own emotions and our physical body.

This idea of music as a healing force is supported by Pythagoras (6th B.C.), who after his investigations on the therapeutic value of harmonics concluded, the real power of the seven modes of the Greek system of music could incite or allay the different emotions.

Pythagoras cured many ailments of the spirit, soul, and body by having certain specially prepared musical compositions played in the presence of the sufferer or by personally reciting short selections from such early poets as Hesiod and Homer.” - Manly P.Hall ”The Secret Teachings of All Ages”

The Sweet Music of Poetry!

In Ancient Greece, music was considered to have the power to act upon and modify the state of feelings of individuals – the power to induce action, to strengthen or to weaken the mental balance and even to generate a state of unconsciousness, where the will of the individual is kept absent. They’ve recognized correlations between the musical sounds and the natural processes that were deemed capable of influencing the human conduct. Their concept of Ethos expressed the organization, differentiation and balance of the rhythmical components, melodic and poetic alike. And the synchronicity of all those elements was considered to be of major importance on the music influence over the human character.

Andrew Barker, in his “Greek Musical Writings” specifies the following: “But melodies themselves do contain imitations of character. This is perfectly clear, for the harmoniai have quite distinct natures from one another, so that those who hear them are differently affected and do not respond in the same way to each. To some, such as the one called Mixolydian, they respond with more grief and anxiety, to others, such as the relaxed harmoniai, with more mellowness of mind, and to one another with a special degree of moderation and firmness, Dorian being apparently the only one of the harmoniai to have this effect, while Phrygian creates ecstatic excitement.

Vibrations flow through many different media besides music, either fully expressed or subliminally.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, author of the book “Messages from Water”, whom we know from the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know”, devoted his investigations to the analysis of the effects of consciousness and emotions, beauty and ugliness, and various kinds of music on the molecules of water. In his book, he shows the most amazing images of the differently shaped water crystals generated by each specific projection or influence during his several experiments. This video captures those images beautifully:

And indeed, as mentioned in the film “What The Bleep Do We Know: Down The Rabbit Hole”, if our bodies are 70% water, what kind of vibrations are we going to feed them?!

The Music of the Spheres:

The father of the diatonic scale (scale of eight notes to the octave) and the laws governing consonance and dissonance, Pythagoras (2) conceived the universe to be an immense monochord, with its single string connected at its upper end to absolute spirit and at its lower end to absolute matter--in other words, a cord stretched between heaven and earth. From the sphere of the earth to the sphere of the moon; one tone; from the sphere of the moon to that of Mercury, one half-tone; from Mercury to Venus, one-half; from Venus to the sun, one and one-half tones; from the sun to Mars, one tone; from Mars to Jupiter, one-half tone; from Jupiter to Saturn, one-half tone; from Saturn to the fixed stars, one-half tone. The sum of these intervals equals the six whole tones of the octave.

He also conceived a twelve-fold system starting with the empyrean, the sphere of the fixed stars, followed by the spheres of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, and the Elements Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. To the various notes of the diatonic scale the Pythagoreans gave names derived from an estimation of the velocity and magnitude of the planetary bodies. As each planet spiraled endlessly through space, it was believed to sound a certain tone caused by its displacement of the Ether.

Vibrations – everything is expressed through vibrations; therefore it seems accurate to acknowledge that if we are susceptible to the influence of music, we are also being influenced by the Music of the Spheres, the vibrations of the planets on their spiraling cosmic dance through our solar system.

Table of relationship between Musical Notes, Planets, Colors, Principles of Man and States of matter:

Musical Note Planet Color Principles of Man States of matter
Do Mars Red Seat of Animal Life Ice
Re Sun orange Life Principle Critical state
Mi Mercury Yellow Spiritual Soul Water
Fa Saturn Green Animal Soul Critical State
Sol Jupiter Blue Auric Envelope Steam or Vapor
La venus Indigo Spiritual Intelligence Critical State called Air
Si Moon Violet Etheric Double Ether

In his work Mysterium Cosmographicum ('the cosmic mystery'), published in 1596, Johannes Kepler, “speculated that one of the five (platonic) solids could be inserted between each concentric planetary sphere. This seemed to explain why there were just six planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with five intervals separating them, and why the intervals were so irregular. Convinced that he had discovered a subtle geometric relationship between the diameters of the planetary orbits and their distances from the Sun. The scheme worked reasonably well with the planetary distances then accepted, but even Kepler could see that it wasn't perfect. Assuming that better data on planetary orbits would bear out his theory, he devoted the rest of his life to justifying his vision through scientific observation and hard mathematical proofs.” David Plant in “Kepler and the Music of the Spheres

On his First Law of Planetary Motion, Kepler states that the planets move in ellipses and that the Sun is not to be found at the exact centre of their orbits, each planet moving between a perihelion point (nearest the Sun) and an aphelion point (furthest away from the Sun). On his Second Law he goes on to state that the planets move faster at perihelion than at aphelion. After having measured the angular velocities of the planets at these extremes (the traveled distance in 24 hours, in minutes and seconds of arc as viewed from the Sun) he expressed the ratio as a musical interval. He then found that the angular velocities of all the planets closely correspond to musical intervals. By comparing the extremes for combined pairs of planets, the results produced the intervals of a complete scale.

Furthermore, David Plant states:

“Thus, the ratio between Jupiter's maximum and Mars' minimum speed corresponds, to a minor third; the interval between Earth and Venus to a minor sixth. Rather than the fixed-tone planetary scales of earlier schemes, Kepler's measurements revealed ever-changing polyphonic chords and harmonies as the planets move between perihelion and aphelion. Furthermore, he had shifted the focus of celestial harmony from the Earth to the Sun: "Henceforth it is no longer a harmony made for the benefit of our planet, but the song which the cosmos sings to its lord and centre, the Solar Logos"

“The Kepler scholar Francis Warrain extended Kepler's researches and found that the angular velocities of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which were unknown during Kepler's lifetime, also correspond to harmonic ratios. The music of the spheres is more than a beautiful poetic intuition. The dynamics of the solar system, first laid bare by Kepler's mathematical genius, are directly analogous to the laws of musical harmony.” (6)

Let’s dance … these Cosmic Vibes!

With music, symbols are used to translate expressions of sound, silence, vibration and its plural relationships. Astrology also uses symbols and archetypes to translate the expressions of the planetary bodies and the interactions between them, the flow of their vibrations projected towards mother Earth.

By reading a music notation, a musician can easily listen in his own mind to the effects of those symbols at play. By reading an astrological chart, an astrologer can easily see the ultimate expression of the cosmic dance being reflected, and acted upon, by an individual, a country, or even a chosen moment in time.

It is this world, and language, of Astrology that we are going to explore in upcoming articles, while approaching the many creative possibilities of a constructive use of the cosmic energy.

Have a wonderful dance! … and enjoy the Cosmic Vibes!

Tarot: Bekers III
Petra Stam

Film and creativity
John Schwab
The creative possibilities in film are endless. They can be about artists and the creative process, or films can also be artistic works in themselves by using new techniques and technology or by showing us new ways and perspectives of seeing ourselves and the world around us.

Try the experience of watching these excellent films about talented artists and people who have a creative ability that keeps them alive under the most difficult circumstances. Many of these artists struggled with abuse, pain or sadness, either in their childhoods or during adult life, and they managed to somehow deal with their misery and desires by channeling it through their creative impulse.

Crumb (1994) is a documentary about an underground adult comic artist from the 60s who loves to draw strong shapely women in perverse situations. Robert Crumb is a well-known underground artist who has achieved a mainstream following since this film exposed him as a major talent. This is an insightful documentary because it goes deeply into Crumb’s personal life and exposes the dark psychological side of the creative process.

Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time (2001) is a riveting documentary that will make you stare in awe at how stunning art can be created spontaneously using only what is found around you in nature. An inspired artist wanders around in the woods, stumbling upon a creek, he uses the leaves, twigs and stones around him, and with some patience and persistence, creates jaw dropping, natural art. This film shows the uniqueness and beauty of not only the art but also the inventive method by which it’s created. This one is not to be missed. If you want to see a creative mind in action, you have to see it to believe it.

Tintin et Moi (Tintin and I) (2003) is a detailed in-depth documentary about Hergé, the Belgian creator of the popular children’s comic book series The Adventures of Tintin and the circumstances under which he was sometimes forced to work when the company he worked for came under Nazi control during W.W. II. Never having traveled to any of the placed that he so accurately depicts in his hero’s adventures, he meticulously researched all the locations in books, newspapers and from people who had been there. This documentary is even more interesting because it’s all based on an interview he did for a young student, years before, that he felt he could open up to and talk intimately about his personal life and his creations.

Ryan (2004) is a fascinating documentary about a brilliant young Canadian artist, Ryan Larkin, who was a gifted animator in the 60s and 70s but now lives on the streets as an alcoholic vagrant. The film itself is created using a unique style of animation and shows a broken, homeless artist wandering the streets of Montreal, rummaging through garbage and reflecting back on his promising early career with the NFB 30 years before as the creator of some of the most influential animated films. It shows how even the most promising and talented people are vulnerable to life’s worst fates.

The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo (2005) is a PBS documentary and a great companion piece to the movie Frida (2002) about the life of the brilliant Mexican artist Frida Khalo and her battle with her broken body while creating some of the most unique and powerful images of her time. It exposes the pain and agony of an artist and how she channeled this misery to create striking pieces of art.

Sketches of Frank Gehry (2005) is about a creative architect who uses unconventional methods to inspire him when creating a new building. Using crumpled paper and doodles renowned architect Frank Gehry is able to come up with some very unusual ideas for building structures. We are shown some of Frank’s most famous buildings around the world and then through a conversation with his good friend, film director Sydney Pollack, he takes us through the creative process that resulted in these unique architectural pieces of art.

The Cats of Mirikitani (2006) is a touching human story about an 80 year old Japanese-American painter living on the streets of Soho, New York just blocks away from the twin towers. Interned by the American government during W.W. II when he was twenty five years old and still traumatized by the experience, he paints pictures of the internment camp where thousands of his Japanese family and friends died and their citizenship was revoked. Befriended and taken in by the film maker of this documentary during the chaos of the 911 attacks, she begins to investigate the artist’s history while sharing her apartment with him. While taking care of him she discovers the shocking history of this unknown artist.

Exit through the Gift Shop (2010) is a unique documentary about the beginnings of the street art movement and an obsessive compulsive amateur videographer and vintage clothing retailer with a knack for making old things cool for a new generation. Inspired by street artists and with a deep admiration for their work, Theirry Guetta, captures everything he sees on video tape while following and helping famous graffiti artists secretly putting up their work in public spaces around the city of Los Angeles. Telling everyone that he plans to make a documentary one day with the footage he collects, he instead decides to use what he has learned to become a street artist himself. The ending can be read in two different ways; if you’re a cynic, you will think that he uses his new artist friends to dupe the art world into thinking he is the next big name in modern art. If you’re more forgiving, you will believe as he does, being the optimist that he is, that he really is a great artist who was driven by admiration for his graffiti art friends to find his true calling in life.

Marwencol (2010) is an astonishing documentary about a man who was beaten, while drunk one night, into a coma. When he comes out of it and his wounds have healed, he has no memory of the traumatic event and to deal with this he starts creating, in great detail, a miniature W.W. II town out of action figures so realistic, that the pictures he takes of it become the subject of a bold new art exhibit. I like this doc because it shows how the creative impulse of the mind is so strong that it remains our biggest asset. Not to be missed.

MicMacs (2010) is highly inventive and imaginative. The story is about Bazil (Dany Boon) whose life is changed irreparably in two separate incidents that leave him orphaned in one instance and homeless and brain damaged in another, both due to products manufactured by large weapons corporations. When one day he discovers the headquarters of these two corporations across the street from each other in a neighborhood of Paris, he decides to exact revenge in the style that Amélie Poulain would have been proud of. The soundtrack to this film is just as creative and inventive as the movie and makes for a wonderful listening experience.

Violinists that Fiddle About

The art, the trees and the Stone

An interview with Paulo Neves

By Teresa Pinto
One of the ateliers of Paulo Neves, built among the pine trees, right next to the gate of the farm where he lives, is his first visit card. The building shows already the grandeur of his work. The door itself is a sculpture and it has the monumentality that characterizes great part of his work. The ribs carved in the wood, that leafy effect, a hallmark of his sculptures, give to the work's grandeur smatterings of a simple and tender beauty.

Every artist expresses himself through his work, but many talk about it too. That’s not the case: "I'm not a man of many words.”
Paulo let his work speak for itself. He knows that he would be short of words to express his visionary thoughts, his emotions, the images, the dream. And also because: "while I work, that piece of art is mine. But when I finish it, it does not belong to me anymore. Nothing is mine. I think it’s like having children: they are ours and they are not”.

Paulo Neves started painting when he was about seventeen years old: "paintings, because it was much easier to carry. To make sculptures you must have a space and besides, the materials are heavy and I was hitchhiking back then. I would always carry drawings, sheets and canvas with me. But painting and drawing is always related to sculpture. I still do it.
In earlier times I wandered a lot in Paris, Madrid and then in the South of Portugal. My dream was to live from my work. I was living in the kind of place where nothing unusual is supposed to happen. I had to get out of here.
Nowadays, I think everything is going on here! "

His experience and almost necessity to translate his interior in the art is quite older though. ”I remember to be always picking my father’s tools and I would go and carve wood. I should have been eight years old. I also remember a couple of years later, when the first man walked on the Moon, to have carved astronauts and a spaceship on a tree trunk.
Since I’m very young I wanted to be a sculptor."

While the images enliven the memory, a bird lands near the vine and starts a strident chirping. We laugh. Is the bird not in favour of many words too?:-)

The wood …
The choice of material was almost inevitable: I lived here in this village surrounded by wood: chestnut, oak, cedar, pine, … I started to work with the materials I had here. Only much later, when I went to Alentejo, to Vila Viçosa, I discovered the marble quarries and I started then to work the marble as well. I could have been about thirty…

On the ecological question that arises due to his choice of the materials, Paulo says: "Two years ago I planted 1700 Chestnuts. I think when you cut a tree you should plant more. And this is what I have been doing throughout my life. And usually there is also wood that has to be cut down, one way or another, as for example the cedar tree. I work a lot with Cedar. In the winter when there are whirlwinds cedar trees fall very easily. I know that after a storm, I will have Cedar to work.
There is a very close relationship between me and nature."

What is your relationship with the wood and what is your relationship with the stone?
They are very different materials. What you can do with wood you can’t do with stone.
I like to work the stone. I really like the stone! But I like só much the wood! The wood has more to do with me: it’s more organic, it’s alive, it is always moving. The wood is lighter, the wood smells, …
The stone is cooler, is heavier. It is different.

You work with themes. How does a theme emerge?
It happens on the spot. While working, things happen. A theme arises and I work it out.
Then there is a moment in which the topic ceases. That doesn’t mean that I won’t restart it later.
Each theme has a different number of pieces; this is also an intuitive process. It arises.
This exhibition now taking place in Lisbon, ‘saints’, is a work with 30 pieces. No special reason for this number.

Your work has often religious themes. What is your relation with religion?
The churches always enchanted me as holy places. I am a religious person though I am not a practitioner of religion. I like to represent angels but I do not intend to convey something religious to people. The pieces I call 'saints', you can call them something else. What my work raises in you it’s your world, not mine.

There were two events that left deep prints in your heart and you brought them to light in your work: the death of your brother, and later the death of your mother.
Yes, when my brother died I made a series of pieces with the theme ' birth and death ' and when my mother died I made a work, a kind of crumpled paper, with crushed scraps of cardboard, some kind of monsters. That work is in the attic, one day I will exhibit it.
It was my way of liberating myself putting out the energy and the pain.
Life happens to everybody, happens to me too. One day I also will die.
For the rest, my work is more my relationship between me and the material and between me and the sacred. And that process is almost unconscious, in the sense that I am more an instrument. When I work with the chainsaw I get sometimes astonished with some movements. When I look back to certain lines I sometimes wonder: how did it go this way?

Keith Jarret said almost the same in an interview: "the hands go. Often I don’t know where about do they go. But the less I worry about it the better the music I make."

There is some routine in your daily life…
My day to day life is here, week in week out. I get up very early, I love to get up early and work in the morning. I stop for lunch and use the afternoon to take care of business (phone calls, meetings with clients, …). In the evening I have my diner, I watch a bit TV or listen to music. Then I like to go early to bed.
I like a certain isolation. I really like to be alone.

How do you see your work, all parts, all themes...
My entire work is a great piece. All the pieces are one.
It is a process that is not yet complete. I'm very happy with my work but it’s not finished yet. It's like life: your life is until you die, it never ends before. Processes are always unfinished processes, every day I feel the need to work.

The sun shines, the birds chirp, on the table there is already a bottle of wine, a beer, figs … As the fado says: ' bread and wine suits the table of a Portuguese house”.
Paulo gave another interview (to a young woman who had to do a work on art, for the university) and we went on with our conversation on our new art project.
Our annual meetings in Portugal are a must since I came to live in the Netherlands, but last year we also met in Brussels, to the opening of his exhibition at the bookstore Orfeu. It was a very synchronic meeting: Paul’s wish to open a gallery and my wish to start again to organize exhibitions and 'open podia’. So we decided to join forces and to do this work together.

In the editor’s block you can read more about this project and in the pages of art you can see the design of the gallery, made by our friend, architect Fernando Castro Coelho.
In the next issue we will give more details on our (ad)venture.

Spontaneity still prevails in Portugal: you never know with what for ideas you leave the restaurant when you enter just to have some grilled fish :-)

A arte, as árvores e a pedra

Uma entrevista com Paulo Neves

Teresa Pinto

A madeira…

Enquanto trabalho, as coisas vao acontecendo.

As igrejas sempre me encantaram como lugares sagrados.

A vida acontece a toda a gente, acontece-me a mim também.

O teu dia-a-dia é feito duma certa rotina…

Fernando Castro Coelho tomou a cargo.
